The most sensible way to support vitamin D status is to combine strategies. First, aim for brief, regular and safe sun exposure when possible. Second, include natural and fortified food sources. Third, use supplements only when there is a clear reason, confirmed deficiency or a high risk of inadequate levels.

A practical week might include two meals with oily fish, several eggs spread across breakfasts or dinners, a fortified dairy or plant-based product if it suits your diet, and outdoor walks on most days. It does not need to become a rigid plan. Consistency matters more than perfection.

For people who work indoors, small changes help: walking during a phone call, going outside after lunch, doing errands on foot or exercising outdoors once or twice a week. Sitting near a window is pleasant, but it does not replace direct outdoor exposure for vitamin D production.
